Regarding the bizarre part, check the logs for the real recipients (those who received the messages). Value in To field has no meaning, is just a header passed during SMTP Data and can be misleading....

My suggestion would be to contact technical support and they can help verify your configuration and dig deeper in to the specific samples you provide and find out why they are or aren't being detected...
